Hand Issues We Can Address

The treatment you receive will vary, depending on the severity of your hand condition, injury, and the diagnosis. Dr. Galpern’s priority is to begin treatment with non-surgical, conservative methods to help you achieve full function without pain and without surgery.

However, if these treatments are not successful or if there has been damage that requires reconstruction or repair, surgery may be recommended to help prevent further damage. Dr. Galpern and his team at Comprehensive Hand Surgery Center in Richmond will answer all your questions about treatment and provide you with the necessary information to ensure that your surgical or non-surgical treatments are cared for correctly at home.

De Quervian's Tenosynovitis

De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis causes pain and inflammation in the hand, along the thumb and wrist. When left untreated, the area can get stiff, and the tendon becomes permanently restricted. If non-surgical treatment is unsuccessful, a surgical release may relieve the pressure and friction, improving movement and pain.

Trigger Finger

When the tendon that guides the movement of a finger does not glide easily, the finger can get stuck in a bent position. The condition can affect any of your fingers but happens more frequently in the thumb and ring finger. Women with diabetes, low thyroid function, and rheumatoid arthritis are at greater risk. Surgery may be used to widen the tendon sheath so it can move more easily.

Dupuytren’s Contracture

Also called Dupuytren’s disease, this is a thickening of the layer of tissue directly under the skin in the palm of your hand. This may develop into a lump or band that can cause one or more fingers to curl, pulling sideways or into the palm. A surgeon can remove the thickened tissue to improve finger mobility.
